Land Rescue - August 8 2010

On August 8 at approximately 2300 STAR Flight 1 was requested by North Hays County Fire & Rescue and San Marcos EMS to assist with the rescue of a 30 y/o Male patient who had fallen approximately 30 feet down a cliff. The victim was unconscious and in critical condition. North Hays County Fire & Rescue personnel had rappelled to the victim and begun treatment and packaging the patient for extrication. On scene command elected to have STAR Flight hoist the victim out because of patient condition and difficult terrain. STAR Flight inserted a rescuer and extricated the patient via the hoist aided by night vision goggles. The rescue effort was complicated by steep terrain, overhanging canopy and darkness. The patient was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin with potential life threatening injuries.
